No matter what history or lore inspires Chris Boltendahl, you know he will always deliver a rifftastic classic Heavy Metal album by Grave Digger. The band's latest, Clash Of The Gods, is no exception. So while Chris called in to WSCA to promote the new album, I definitely wanted to learn more about the man himself. Is he all about chicks and golf? I just wish I had asked him how he keeps coming up with so many killer Metal riffs!

Much has been said and written about Leather Leone over the years, but this conversation was about the here and now. And the here and now is Sledge Leather and their debut album Imagine Me Alive.

So after hearing us talk about dogs, car commercials, and some guy upstairs, you will feel the overwhelming need to blast Imagine Me Alive before your Ruler Of The Wasteland vinyl and The Voice Of The Cult cassette. This is where Leather is, now. One glimpse of Sledge Leather, 2012. Imagine them on tour in a town near you.

Ihsahn interview - 15 May 12
June 25, 2012 11:01 PM PDT
itunes pic

Ihsahn should be regarded as the finest songwriter in Metal. His work in Emperor alone was glorious, and his Ihsahn albums continue to astound. The previous album After was his crowning achievement, and now the same can be said for Eremita. I was delighted to have Ihsahn back on the WSCA 106.1 FM airwaves to discuss Eremita, songwriting, the next album, shovels, weddings, balloons...

Cage interview - Sean Peck 17 Apr 12
May 06, 2012 12:53 PM PDT
itunes pic

Cage has definitely hit their stride. The band's knack for crafting catchy yet crushing Metal continues to impress more with each album. Science Of Annihilation truly established the band's songwriting prowess, and now Supremacy Of Steel solidifies that even further. SOS offers up the heavy yet melodic gems Flying Fortress and King Of The Wasteland for your repeated pummeling enjoyment. And when you need to be piledriven into oblivion, Bloodsteel and Doctor Doom oblige.

And speaking of Doctor Doom, what's a Cage interview with Sean Peck without a Marvel Comics discussion? No interview at all I say. So Sean and I delve into which Marvel character we want by our side in battle, which is the hottest (of course), the storylines, games, tv, movies, and Cage's own Marvel Metal.

You get updates on the latest Cage info (new album and ideas), and find out just how accessible Sean is to the fans. On a light-hearted note, Sean describes the Cage look. He would not be mistaken for Norrin Radd (well, maybe with a surf board and planet eater in tow).

April 27, 2012 03:03 PM PDT
itunes pic

Having interviewed Alestorm before, I knew what to expect from Dani and Chris. This time we focused on the music, and perhaps a little more serious discussion overall. I may have even annoyed them with my take on the viking/pirate non-controversy. Both guys are swell lads, and are genuine in their love of what they do, which is produce great (and fun) Heavy Metal. I look forward to speaking with them again, and maybe next time there will be more of an easy-going atmosphere...without the cold, damp dressing room that felt like a Soviet prison cell.

Firewind interview - Bob Katsionis 13 Oct 11
November 06, 2011 12:54 PM PST
itunes pic

Think of Bob Katsionis as the Vangelis of Metal. Extraordinarily talented, a multi-faceted career, and highly respected in music. So it only made sense for myself and Turn It Up host Jim Alvino to speak with him on a tourbus outside of a bar in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. While Firewind deserves arena-status, the band tours the U.S. no matter the climate. Therefore their dedication to their craft knows no boundaries, and as this conversation proves Bob and the band will push those boundaries. While we may or may not get a Firewind african-drumming album, we can expect more Melodic Metal mastery. But here's hoping for Bob to record a tribute album to the older synth masters like Vangelis, Tomita, and Synergy.

Icarus Witch interviews - 12 Apr 11 & 20 Dec 10
May 06, 2011 08:00 AM PDT
itunes pic

I've been a fan of Icarus Witch from the moment I heard the Roses On White Lace EP when we got it as a new release at WSCA about 6 years. It's only taken that long for Black Night Meditations to finally have the Witch on the 106.1 airwaves. Since that first EP, the band has released 3 stellar albums and experienced the rise of the scene, growing in size and scope. Yet the band predated it by years. The Witch's commitment to their craft is proof that they will still be here years from now. While firmly steeped in Metal history, at times wearing their influences on their sleeves, Icarus Witch has created a sound all their own. When you hear their music, you know it's the Witch.

Up first is guitarist Quinn Lukas calling in (from a men's room in a bar) for a live on-air Witch update with myself and Turn It Up host Jim Alvino. Afterward, you will hear our backstage discussion with Lukas, bassist Jason Myers and vocalist Christopher Shaner recorded after a concert during the Paul Di'Anno tour.

70000 Tons Of Metal Cruise report
February 10, 2011 09:51 PM PST
itunes pic

BNM's roving Metal reporter, or in this case...cruising Metal reporter, Matt Bower called in on 2/1 to tell the tales of sailing the treacherous high seas, all in the name of Metal. Hear Matt discuss how the 70000 Tons Of Metal Cruise has redefined the art of the Metal festival by taking a full-sized cruise ship, adding over 40 Metal bands and a couple thousand headbangers from almost 50 countries, and setting sail from Miami to Cozumel. The Love Boat this was not.

Yes, Swashbuckle was on-board. No, Alestorm was not. Destruction, Blind Guardian, Voivod, Agent Steel, Testament, Sodom, Marduk, Amon Amarth, Raven, Saxon, Obituary, and so many more. If only Running Wild were still around. For those who did not sail under jolly roger, Matt explains what he got for his 666 doubloons, if anyone walked the plank, and if Kai Hansen really likes tacos.

Bonded By Blood interview - Juan Juarez 19 Nov 10
February 05, 2011 08:37 AM PST

Juan doesn't comes across as a typical Metalhead, and that is a bit refreshing. But listening to Bonded By Blood's 2 albums and seeing the band play live, Juan's progressive background is not quite so obvious. I look forward to hearing more of his prog influence in BBB's music, as it could help keep the band vital and set them apart from their peers.

Lizzy Borden interview
December 04, 2010 11:56 AM PST
itunes pic

Having been a fan of Lizzy Borden since the old days, I was thrilled to finally be speaking with the man himself. Oddly enough, myself and Jim Alvino (host of Turn It Up on Saturdays 6-8pm) spoke with Lizzy in the open doorway of a building the band was using in a dark alleyway behind a club. Not the best of circumstances, given that the Lizzy camp was clearly enjoying themselves rather loudly. You'll hear them throughout the interview. But what you are listening for is Lizzy, and he talks about a new album, previous albums, touring, the live show, concert setlists, and more. Not only does Lizzy Borden the band rule, but so does the man. What a nice, down-to-earth guy.

-My top 5 Lizzy Borden songs / albums-

1. Council For The Cauldron / Love You To Pieces
2. Be One Of Us / Appointment With Death
3. Appointment With Death / Master Of Disguise
4. Voyeur / Menace To Sobriety
5. Psychodrama / Visual Lies

Shredding The Envelope interview - Dave Reffett 08 Jun 10
June 19, 2010 09:28 AM PDT

Dave Reffett of Shredding The Envelope was in WSCA's studio for 5 hours, talking about Metal, soloing on the guitar and spinning tunes (this podcast is edited to feature only the in-studio discussion and Dave's soloing). WSCA's Assistant Metal Director & Turn It Up host Jim Alvino joined us for this special edition of BNM. The 3 of us delved into Dave's background, discussed S.T.E., and pondered his future. We also talked about band self-promotion, Dio, guitar players, and much more.

Shredding The Envelope is Dave Reffett's project, melding Hard Rock & Heavy Metal with a serious axe attack. But STE is not just a collection of solos, it is an album of songs that are catchy yet ferocious, old-school yet modern, memorable but leaves you saying, "wow, what did I just hear?"

Ronnie James Dio - A 5-Hour Radio Tribute
May 19, 2010 10:10 PM PDT
itunes pic

Sunday, May 16th 2010 was the saddest day in Metal history. Truly a black sabbath. Ronnie James Dio was gone. There will never, ever be a greater loss.

I've had many influences, people who've impacted my Metal life. None had more impact than Ronnie James Dio. I could attempt to explain how important Dio was to me, but I don't think I could accurately communicate what Dio has meant to my life over the years. His music and lyrics do that better than I could. So it was with a heavy heart that I dedicated a 5-hour Black Night Meditations to Ronnie just 2 days after he died. But I had to do it. For me, the fans, and Ronnie.

I programmed this tribute as a fan to honor a man (born here in Portsmouth) who always honored his fans. I spoke at length of my appreciation for Ronnie as a vocalist and a frontman. I also acknowledged his unparalleled affection for his fans. From Rainbow, to Sabbath, to Dio and Heaven & Hell, I offered my thoughts on Dio's amazing discography. I read on-air many comments emailed to BNM from Dio fans, which included members of Benedictum, Deceased, Faith Factor, and Heavy Artillery Records. 40 songs from Dio's career (Rainbow thru Heaven & Hell) were played including requests and many live bootlegs from tours throughout the years. I also spun a live Elf cover of 'War Pigs' and a Ronnie & The Prophets song. I hope that listening to this tribute to Ronnie will have you banging your head, with a smile on your face and your horns held high. hungry

Long live Rock and Roll, and long live Ronnie James Dio!

Deceased interview - King Fowley 27 Apr 10
May 07, 2010 09:31 PM PDT
itunes pic

Robert Louis Stevenson once wrote, "saints are sinners who kept on going." So would that make King Fowley the patron saint of Metal? To say that he's kept on going is an understatement, with band lineup changes, label issues, and health scares that could frighten anyone into their grave (Fowley is clearly immune to burial). You could also apply the RLS quote as a metaphor for Deceased's music: the gutwrenched dread of their early releases which has evolved over time into the melodic, hook-laden anthems of their recent discography.

King called in to BNM to talk touring, the current state of Deceased and the upcoming album, as well as very important matters such as old KISS albums, scary movies, New Wave music, '80s television, the ghost of Rex Smith, dying telephones, and the eternal question humans have been asking themselves for aeons: Janet, Chrissy, Cindy or Terri? "Come and knock on our dooooor..."

Overkill interview - Bobby Blitz Ellsworth 11 Mar 10
March 23, 2010 12:08 PM PDT

It's been over 20 years that I've been blasting Overkill's albums. They are one of the few bands that I follow adamantly (releases, tours, interviews, news, side projects, etc.), so you could say I have a vested interest. So when I have a chance to speak with Blitz, I take it. Back in '07 we hung out in the back of the tour bus and talked at length. This time, I only had 20 minutes on the phone with him so I had to stay on track with talking about the Ironbound album and the Killfest tour. But I was able to throw in a few other things, such as a tour with Motorhead and Bobby's home life ("mommy, daddy, doggy"). It's not too surprising he remodels rooms in his house. Guess which room he's working on now. Yeah, it figures. My fault for asking. To which Blitz could only say, "Sorry. Haha!"

After you listen to this new interview, listen to my lengthy 2007 interview with Blitz here: http://bnm.podomatic.com/entry/2008-07-06T11_37_30-07_00

W.A.S.P. interview - Blackie Lawless 29 Jan 10
February 26, 2010 10:56 AM PST
itunes pic

Blackie Lawless is a Metal legend. That cannot be denied. And we're all aware of the quality of his songwriting and album releases. But what should be stated more often is how he is one of Metal's most gifted vocalists. From the harrowing emotive, to the causticly grating, Blackie's vocal range has long been W.A.S.P.'s signature, just as much as the very familiar songs we all know and love. And it's those songs that keep us coming back for more. Whether it's the typical but glorious fare heard on Babylon, the nod to the old days that was Helldorado, the successful attempt to tweak the W.A.S.P. sound that we heard on K.F.D., or their first mature & darker statement of intent called The Headless Children, we do keep coming back for more 25 years later.

I only had less than 30 minutes to speak with Blackie, and that just was not nearly enough time. He's in my top 5 people that I must speak with, so I had alot to discuss. Since Blackie had much to say, we could only cover so much ground, which included the new album Babylon, live performance, and Blackie's thoughts on a few songs from W.A.S.P.'s career. After listening, you must crank Still Not Black Enough, Babylon and The Last Command. And then proceed to crank all the other W.A.S.P. albums.

The man. The myth. The legend. The breakdancer. Richard Christy has made a name for himself in so many ways, calling him a renaissance man isn't enough. While he may be a "radio" personality, actor, filmmaker, he will forever be annointed: Richard Christy - Drum God. Or just Evil Ned. He's proven himself on many albums, and continues to pound out quality Metal with Charred Walls Of The Damned. RC called in to BNM live to talk about Charred Walls, Metal, prank phone calls, Electric Boogaloo, Wrathchild America, and christmas movies. And is Richard Christy ticklish? BNM gets that crucial bit of info that no one else would dare to.

I have a very short list of people in music that I must speak with. Ihsahn is on that list. His music has impacted me immensely over the years, from the early days of Emperor, to Peccatum and other projects, to his Ihsahn albums. His third album After is a brilliant work that transcends boundaries, yet does not stray from the Ihsahn aesthetic. An absolute masterpiece. Ihsahn has outdone himself. We spoke for 45 minutes about After, his previous albums, songwriting, Emperor worship, and much more. Our conversation was held in two parts, on January 21st & 26th.

Týr interview - Heri & Kári 08 Jan 10
January 26, 2010 07:08 AM PST

"Heathen heart. Pagan pride. Faring far. Sword by Side." The opening lines from "Hold The Heathen Hammer High" on Týr's By The Light of the Northern Star album...the band's finest release thus far. According to Heri, wait until we here the next one! While BTLOTNS is Týr at their best, each album is better than the previous release. So what does the future hold for Týr? We can expect more of what we have come to love from the band...their brand of Progressive Viking Folk Metal. While a dvd release is not imminent, frontman Heri is releasing a solo album which should hold over fans until the next Týr album in 2011, even if it will be a different style of Metal. Now if only we could convince Kári to release a solo album.

Myself and Assistant Metal Director/Turn It Up host Jim Alvino joined Týr members Heri Joensen (vocals/guitar) and Kári Streymoy (drums) on the band's tour bus before their show as direct support for Korpiklaani in Worcester, MA.

The Great Kat interview - 01 Dec 09
December 17, 2009 04:00 PM PST

The Great Kat must be worshipped. Media outlets who proclaim The Great Kat to be in the top 50, top 10, top whatever, are wrong. The Great Kat is the best, the fastest, the greatest. She is Beethoven reincarnated. This is not open for debate. You either 'get' what this means, or you do not. "Only one who devotes himself to a cause with his whole strength and soul can be a true master. For this reason, mastery demands all of a person." -Albert Einstein

Read the follow-up email interview below, after listening to the phone interview (the yellow/green play button is at the bottom). Fellow WSCA DJ Kim joined me in the studio for the interview.

BLACK NIGHT MEDITATIONS - A heathenish foray along the shining path. Aural ruminations of Black, Death, Speed, Thrash, Doom, Folk, Shred, Power, Prog & Traditional Metal.

Tuesday Nights 10pm-2am e.s.t. - WSCA 106.1 FM - Portsmouth, NH USA - Listen online live @ www.wscafm.org

***The Great Kat email interview - 17 Dec 09***

BNM - There were a few things we did not get to discuss during our phone interview. I'd like you to expand on the evolution of your music. Your first 2 albums, Worship Me Or Die & Beethoven On Speed, featured more of a Thrash influence, notably in the riffs. Since your brand of Shred/Classical hadn't fully developed to what it has been over the last decade, can you explain the influence that Thrash Metal had on your early songwriting? Your Metal influences were more traditional, so how much of an influence on your song-writing did Thrash have? Was it a product of the times? Were you at all involved in the New York Thrash scene of the '80s?

TGK - The Great Kat High Priestess Of Guitar Shred (http://www.greatkat.com ) got into SPEED METAL after graduating from Juilliard. I liked the power and speed of that music. I decided to mix vicious, speed metal guitar riffs with my Classical Motives. The result was the first Great Kat CD “WORSHIP ME OR DIE!” with it’s RAW, VICIOUS SPEED METAL RIFFS AND CLASSICAL GUITAR SOLOS. The Great Kat’s NEXT CD “BEETHOVEN ON SPEED” was a pure mixture of SHREDDING GUITAR VIRTUOSITY with AUTHENTIC Classical Music from Beethoven, Rimsky-Korsakov, Chopin, Paganini ALL MIXED with POWERFUL METAL SONGS, like “ULTRA-DEAD” and “KAT ABUSE”!

BNM - Much is said about your guitar playing, your violin playing, your image and so on, but I feel your vocals have always been vital to who The Great Kat is. Without those patented Kat shrieks, growls and unique delivery, your music would feel like a symphony without a conductor. My favorite Kat songs tend to be the ones that have the most memorable vocal delivery, especially when you mix the singing and shouting. Would you consider trying new vocal approaches that you have not used in the past? It would be tough to sing over the insanity, but you can easily do it and I want more of those catchy choruses!

TGK - The Great Kat’s BRILLIANT music is a TOTAL MULTIMEDIA COMBINATION of CLASSICAL and METAL Virtuosity with SCREAMS, YELLS, BRUTAL SHOUTING and WILD and OUTRAGEOUS IMAGERY—this is the NEW OPERA of the 21st CENTURY!!!

NOW CHECK OUT THE NEW “BEETHOVEN’S GUITAR SHRED” DVD:
This DVD stars The Great Kat’s Guitar/Violin Virtuosity and finger-blistering guitar shredding of Classical masterpieces and original outrageously theatrical SPEED METAL Wagnerian Mini-Operas.
“Beethoven’s Guitar Shred” DVD Features:
7 Outrageous Shred/Classical Guitar Music Videos, including:
• “The Flight Of The Bumble-Bee” - At the finger-blistering speed of 300 BPM!
• Beethoven’s “5th Symphony” - Metal version of the world’s most famous symphony!
• Paganini’s “Caprice #24” – Kat dazzles on this technical virtuoso showpiece on guitar and violin!
• Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto #3”- The Great Kat shreds on 6 guitars & 3 violins!
• “Torture Techniques” – Watch Kat’s arsenal of Torture devices and abused victims!
• Plus MORE Theatrical Metal Madness!
4 Shred BONUS Features:
• Hot Kat Shred Photos! Shred Geniuses!
Kat Kartoon – A crazy cartoon of The High Priestess of Guitar Shred!
DVD Video Clips: http://www.greatkat.com/dvd/dvd.html

BNM - Do you own the rights to your first 2 albums that were released by Roadracer? Those albums are hard to find, so a reissue would be great for those who have yet to hear your early material. What is the status of the Total Insanity compilation that features over 50 songs from your discography? It is not available on greatkat.com, nor is the Guitar Goddess ep. How can your worshippers get these releases?

TGK - “Total Insanity” is NOT an authorized Great Kat CD and is NOT released by TPR Music.

To purchase The Great Kat’s “Worship Me Or Die!” and “Beethoven On Speed” try Amazon.com. “Guitar Goddess” is on TPR Music, but is currently sold out.

The Great Kat’s NEW “Beethoven’s Guitar Shred” DVD is available through major retailers (Amazon.com, Best Buy, Target, CDUniverse, Barnes And Noble) and through the Kat Store at http://www.greatkat.com/07/index07.html

BNM - Your releases have been issued on vinyl, cassette, cd, and you even released a cd-rom in the mid-90s. Your last 2 releases have been dvds. You seem to want to stay with what is current in promotion, as your online presence has expanded to Youtube, Facebook and Twitter. Will we see any more cd releases, or has the current trend in promotion of music (that sees fewer cd sales) pushed you solely into dvd releases for the forseeable future?

TGK - The Great Kat’s SHRED/CLASSICAL GENIUS MUSIC must be SEEN and well as HEARD—that’s why The Great Kat is concentrating on MUSIC VIDEO DVDS!!! Like Wagner’s Operas, you need to get the ENTIRE GREAT KAT EXPERIENCE to understand the REINCARNATION OF BEETHOVEN FOR YOURSELVES!!!!!!!!!

BNM - How do you regard radio? There aren't many stations (terrestrial, satellite, internet) who are willing to support music such as yours. Those that do "feature" your work tend to be quite insulting and demeaning. Has this old-school method of promoting The Great Kat been worth your effort over the years? Is it still now? Basically, is any press good press for The Great Kat?

TGK - RADIO IS OLD!!! The Great Kat needs to be SEEN to FULLY UNDERSTAND SHRED/CLASSICAL!!!! THAT’S THE MAIN REASON The Great Kat is PRODUCING DVDS!!!!!!!!!!!

REVIEWS OF THE GREAT KAT:
-"The Great Kat should be feared because her hyper-blasting, neo-classical, whirlwind guitar playing is so precise and intense. This woman really is a better guitarist than most men ever were. Beethoven’s Guitar Shred DVD is a portable clinic of seemingly inhuman guitar antics. Dominating torture, blood, fire, anti-terrorist sentiments – all wrapped in an oddly tasteful, hyper-classical visual feast." - Mark Morton, Heavy Metal Examiner
-"The Great Kat named one of the fastest guitar players. Probably the fastest female shredder on the face of the earth. 'Flight Of The Bumble-Bee' at 300 Beats Per Minute. It does not get any faster than that. This ('Beethoven's Guitar Shred' DVD) makes a great stocking stuffer." - Michael Butler, MEVIO Music
"The guitarist Katherine Thomas aka The Great Kat is ranked among the fastest metal shredders of all time." - Danny Kringiel, Spiegel Online (Germany)
-"Blending the showmanship of metal with the intensive musical construction of classical, Kat has carved out a name for herself in musical history by shredding some of the greatest musical works of our time." - Carly Milne, AOL's Digital City

BNM - How do you regard the composer Felix Mendelssohn, given that it's possible J.S. Bach's brilliant music may have been lost to the ages had it not been for Mendelssohn bringing back Bach's compositions to the stage?

TGK - Mendelssohn did a great service to society by finding J.S. BACH’S MUSIC and BRINGING it to the masses! THAT’S THE SAME MISSION THE GREAT KAT IS ON—to BRING BEETHOVEN TO THE PEOPLE WHO DON’T EVEN KNOW BEETHOVEN’S GENIUS MUSIC!!!!!!!!

BNM - You have been motivated to perform music composed by those you consider to be "geniuses." But can we expect The Great Kat's musical tribute to non-composer geniuses such as Galileo Galilei or our founding fathers of the U.S.A.? Certainly you can apply your Shred/Classical style of music in honor of these geniuses as well. Instead of wasting any more of your time on terrorist scum, how about expanding upon the Wagner's War theme and further celebrate our history, or composing music based upon our future through the eyes of the past?

TGK - The Great Kat Guitar Shredder’s MISSION is to NOT only UPDATE CLASSICAL MUSIC for the MASSES, but to ALSO TALK ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW IN THIS TERRORIST INFESTED WORLD—like on my songs “ISLAMOFASCISTS” and “TORTURE TECHNIQUES” from “Beethoven’s Guitar Shred” DVD!!!!!!!!!!

BNM - Many of us Kat slaves would like to here much more of your violin playing. Personally, I'd love to hear solo violin pieces. Especially Paganini's Caprice no.1.

TGK - The Great Kat’s VIOLIN VIRTUOSITY is heard on the NEW BEETHOVEN’S GUITAR SHRED” DVD—on “THE FLIGHT OF THE BUMBLE-BEE”, PAGANINI’S “CAPRICE #24”, BEETHOVEN’S “5th SYMPHONY” and BACH’S “BRANDENBURG CONCERTO #3”!!!!!

On the NEXT Shred/Classical DVD, The Great Kat will be SHREDDING one of THE MOST TECHNICALLY DIFFICULT AND DEMANDING VIOLIN VIRTUOSO PIECES ever written: NICCOLO PAGANINI’S “MOTO PERPETUO” on the GUITAR and VIOLIN, along with works of BEETHOVEN, MOZART and MORE!!!!!!

BNM - Thanks for your time, Kat. I'd love to delve deeper into your psyche and find out more about you as a person, but I know if I tried you'd just pummel me into submission. Your boots would be cleaner, and I'd still have no answers. Thank you again for sticking to your guns over the years, and continuing on with The Great Kat's Shred/Classical supremacy. You have my support.

TGK - THANKS MARK!!

THE GREAT KAT IS THE METAL MESSIAH/REINCARNATION OF BEETHOVEN!

Thomas Watkiss interview - 24 Nov 09
December 01, 2009 10:31 PM PST

It would be easy, almost cliche, to say that the best way to appreciate art is to immerse yourself in it. But when it comes to the music of Thomas Watkiss, that is precisely the path one must take to fully comprehend and thus appreciate the bleak terrestrial landscape that he unearths. When he explains the motivation, the driving force behind his music, it becomes clear that it is multi-sensory. And when the music is imbedded amongst Metal, it all flows seamlessly, and bleak doesn't begin to describe it. As you will hear in our discussion, the music of Thomas Watkiss is meant to be heard in such a manner. www.thomaswatkiss.net

I remember being excited back in '97 about getting Nile's first album Amongst The Catacombs Of Nephren-Ka even before it was released. I knew it would be a masterpiece. To this day, it's still my favorite Nile album. But the newest record, Those Whom The Gods Detest, is a current favorite. I was pleased to finally speak with Karl, having long admired Nile music and his Saurian albums. The songwriting was something I chose for us to focus on. That, and Karl's killer spear that doubles as a guitar. Stagedivers beware. While TWTGD being influenced by Judas Priest was not surprising, what was surprising is which band influenced the songwriting for In Their Darkened Shrines. While My Spear Gently Impales?

Two planets colliding. That is the sound of Cage, so says vocalist Sean Peck. I'm inclined to agree, and even moreso with their latest album Science Of Annihilation. You'd think the highlight of this discussion would be about Metal. While any discussion of Metal is horns-up, the real fun was Sean & I talking about comics. He's got me beat on the number of comics collected since the '80s, but I'm hoping he'll send me a few thousand of his. On what other radio stations could you hear two Metal guys talking about Marvel Comics? None. Comics & Metal...the two are very much alike, and not just because of the rabid fans. Metal needs more Marvel, and vice-versa. Here's hoping Cage records a song about Marvel hero Iron Fist! hungry http://cageheavymetal.com

Jane Badler interview - 11 Sep 09
September 16, 2009 08:56 AM PDT
itunes pic

Another non-Metal interview not a part of BNM. Broaden your horizons. Expand your mind.

Is Jane Badler a Metalhead? Has she been in a mosh pit? Has she ever spent the night in a graveyard? Inquiring Metalheads and Badlerheads want to know. For 27 minutes we discuss pageantry, snow days, college, Australian music, burlesque, cheesecake, tin-foil hats and steel-cage matches. Somehow we manage to work in Jane's album The Devil Has My Double as well as the next "dark, a bit gloomy...but more upbeat" opus.

She may be well-known for her work in television (daytime & primetime soap operas, series, movies, 'V'), but her music is what you should conjure up when thinking of Jane Badler. That, and mosh pits. In graveyards at night. With cheesecake.

Rusty Cooley interview - 19 May 09
May 28, 2009 11:02 AM PDT
itunes pic

Every once in awhile I discover a new instrumental guitar album that reaffirms my long-standing belief that "Shred" will never die. I missed out on Rusty Cooley's solo album several years ago, and I am glad that Lion Music recently reissued the album because it is easily one of the better guitar albums in years. Even his band Outworld released an impressive album. He's shredded with Derek Sherinian, and is forming a new band with Derek. Naturally, I had to speak with Rusty and learn more about him as a musician, as an instructor, and as a person. We spoke live on-air for over 40 minutes, and not only did I really enjoy our conversation but I actually feel like I learned something about the music & the instrument.

A conversation with Primordial & Korpiklaani - 01 May 09
May 18, 2009 10:07 AM PDT

Be aware! The audio quality is bad at times. Myself, Alan Averill (Primordial) and Jarkko Aaltonen (Korpiklaani) sat down in a pub with loud people and loud music. This made the recording very difficult. But when you have the opportunity to talk Metal for an hour with two bands over beers (and pineapple juice), you go with that unique opportunity. When it was loud, we had to speak up and that is what creates the unfortunate static noise. This can't be fixed. But much of our conversation sounds ok, and is worth the 53 minutes of your time.

What started out as questions & answers quickly became a long talk about Metal. Alan had the most to say; Jarkko talked a lot too. Lucky for you, I mostly listened. Recording, touring, sightseeing, and more were discussed. Regardless of the sound quality, this is a must-listen. You have 3 people from different backgrounds, countries & cultures, yet all the same age and all in the music industry. Common Metal ground was found among the three of us, even though our places in Metal are quite different.

Kreator interview - Mille Petrozza 10 Apr 09
May 01, 2009 10:19 AM PDT
itunes pic

This was a long time coming. I've been a Kreator fan for 20 years, so speaking with Mille was a highlight of my Metal life. As with Exodus, I purposefully did not go into our conversation with any planned questions. I just wanted to have a great talk about Kreator. I only had a few minutes to speak with Mille, but it felt like an hour-long conversation because my mind was so deep in Kreatorland. So much to talk about, so little time. But I'm glad we got to talk about the Renewal & Endorama albums, two of my favorites. Mille was very humble, relaxed, and displayed no sense of his royalty status in Metal. After you listen to this, throw on the Coma Of Souls album and crank the volume! hungry

Exodus interview - Tom Hunting 10 Apr 09

To say that Exodus is legendary in Metal is an understatement. And to see them tour with Kreator is every Metalhead's dream. I was happy to speak with Tom, as he does not do too many interviews. I like how direct he was (after-show with the fans, thoughts on the other bands). He does seem to prefer the new material over the old, but I suppose he gets tired of the playing the same old songs all the time. But there is hope of getting some new songs in their setlist (Free For All!). And yes Tom, I do know you're not Gary Holt. You're Rob McKillop! hungry

Chris Poland interview - 21 Apr 09
April 21, 2009 11:12 PM PDT
itunes pic

Whether it's the amazing and diverse Return To Metalopolis album, the classic Megadeth albums, or his fusion project OHM, Chris Poland can be counted on to deliver amazing guitar work. But his songwriting should be highlighted as much as his fretboard skills. "The Fall Of Babylon" is but one great example of the songwriting prowess Chris possesses. While Metal may be in his past and Fusion is where he is at (and always has been), all of his music is heavy in so many ways. You have the Megadeth albums, but you should also have Return To Metalopolis and the OHM album Circus Of Sound.

Chris was very open in our discussion of his life in music. What was to be a 30 minute conversation ended up lasting about an hour. Not surprising, since Chris has had many musical endeavors. He's covered alot of ground since the '70s, in many ways coming full circle...from The New Yorkers to OHM.

***UPDATE*** The following message is from Chris regarding our conversation about the song "The Fall Of Babylon."

<<< "Some of my songs are inspired by sorrow and regret. Not many but some are. Sometimes when I am asked in depth and with passion about these songs those memories come back to me like a flood and I am overwhelmed. I want to answer but I get a bit speechless when this happens and I am uncomfortable to say the least. For me, some things are best left in the past. Some wounds never heal. I will try not answer these anymore." - CP >>>

Derek Sherinian interview - 10 Mar 09

To say that Derek Sherinian is an accomplished musician is an understatement. His songwriting should outshine his collaborations. Whether it's his solo albums or Planet X, his music is "river, not quilt." He's able to seemingly without effort meld different styles of music into Prog Metal supremacy. His new album Molecular Heinosity is no exception, and could be his finest solo release yet. Derek was quite easy to talk with, being very open about his music, career, and life. I am glad to have had 40 minutes of his time.

Rob Halford interview - 03 Dec 08

God is gracious. Indeed, as speaking with Rob Halford was a lesson in humility and respect. He may be called the Metal God, but he comes across as your best friend. What an honor and pleasure to speak with a man who has long been at the top of the Metal hierarchy. He was lengthy, and humble, with his responses. I like what he had to say about his unfortunate comments about Metal during his Two phase, as well as the possibility of hearing another approach to the Two music. And we all want Halford to scream out more Christmas tunes!

Fifth time is the charm. The previous four times I was scheduled to speak with one of the AA guys, it never happened. Thankfully guitarist Johan Soderberg was available to give me 20 minutes before the band's meet & greet. As with every other Scandinavian musician I've interviewed, Johan was soft-spoken and laid back, therefore tough to interview, but quite honest. He spoke about their latest album, the band's record label, and songwriting among other things. And you know you want an Amon Amarth bobblehead!

Uncut, unedited. Mike and I spoke in the back of the tourbus for about 30 minutes. He was very open about his youth, which was interesting to hear. We also discussed Portugal, which led to talk of sports. Our conversation was more personal, as opposed to just talking about Moonspell. His comment about Russia and Rocky IV was hilarious. Mike was great to speak with, and thankfully he had a lot to say. When we were done and I was leaving he gave me a guitar pick and said, "it must seem weird getting a guitar pick from a drummer."

The Human League interview - Phil Oakey 06/08
August 30, 2008 11:06 AM PDT

One of my non-Metal interviews that is not connected with Black Night Meditations, but I'm posting here anyway. I've been a fan of The Human League since I heard their singles from the Dare album on the radio in '81-'82, and have been a fan ever since. I was excited to speak with Phil, and I had a lot I wanted to talk about. This interview was to promote their headlining slot on the Regeneration Tour 2008. I tried to touch on topics that fans would want to know about, as opposed to silly things that so many other interviews discuss. This is one of my best interviews, and it's because I love their music and Phil is so honest and forthcoming.

If you're looking to discover The Human League's music, I recommend the albums Secrets & Dare to start out with. Or if you're not so inclined to track down their albums, at least get The Very Best Of (white cover with an eye). Great song selection to get into THL. And hopefully you made it to the Regeneration Tour: www.regenerationtour.com If you have feedback on this interview, please email: blacknightmeditations(at)msn.com
