I remember being excited back in '97 about getting Nile's first album Amongst The Catacombs Of Nephren-Ka even before it was released. I knew it would be a masterpiece. To this day, it's still my favorite Nile album. But the newest record, Those Whom The Gods Detest, is a current favorite. I was pleased to finally speak with Karl, having long admired Nile music and his Saurian albums. The songwriting was something I chose for us to focus on. That, and Karl's killer spear that doubles as a guitar. Stagedivers beware. While TWTGD being influenced by Judas Priest was not surprising, what was surprising is which band influenced the songwriting for In Their Darkened Shrines. While My Spear Gently Impales?

Two planets colliding. That is the sound of Cage, so says vocalist Sean Peck. I'm inclined to agree, and even moreso with their latest album Science Of Annihilation. You'd think the highlight of this discussion would be about Metal. While any discussion of Metal is horns-up, the real fun was Sean & I talking about comics. He's got me beat on the number of comics collected since the '80s, but I'm hoping he'll send me a few thousand of his. On what other radio stations could you hear two Metal guys talking about Marvel Comics? None. Comics & Metal...the two are very much alike, and not just because of the rabid fans. Metal needs more Marvel, and vice-versa. Here's hoping Cage records a song about Marvel hero Iron Fist!

Another non-Metal interview not a part of BNM. Broaden your horizons. Expand your mind.
Is Jane Badler a Metalhead? Has she been in a mosh pit? Has she ever spent the night in a graveyard? Inquiring Metalheads and Badlerheads want to know. For 27 minutes we discuss pageantry, snow days, college, Australian music, burlesque, cheesecake, tin-foil hats and steel-cage matches. Somehow we manage to work in Jane's album The Devil Has My Double as well as the next "dark, a bit gloomy...but more upbeat" opus.
She may be well-known for her work in television (daytime & primetime soap operas, series, movies, 'V'), but her music is what you should conjure up when thinking of Jane Badler. That, and mosh pits. In graveyards at night. With cheesecake.

If you've ever wondered what it's like to attend Wacken, Matt offers insight into the trek, enduring Metal's premier festival, and making it back home alive.

Every once in awhile I discover a new instrumental guitar album that reaffirms my long-standing belief that "Shred" will never die. I missed out on Rusty Cooley's solo album several years ago, and I am glad that Lion Music recently reissued the album because it is easily one of the better guitar albums in years. Even his band Outworld released an impressive album. He's shredded with Derek Sherinian, and is forming a new band with Derek. Naturally, I had to speak with Rusty and learn more about him as a musician, as an instructor, and as a person. We spoke live on-air for over 40 minutes, and not only did I really enjoy our conversation but I actually feel like I learned something about the music & the instrument.

Be aware! The audio quality is bad at times. Myself, Alan Averill (Primordial) and Jarkko Aaltonen (Korpiklaani) sat down in a pub with loud people and loud music. This made the recording very difficult. But when you have the opportunity to talk Metal for an hour with two bands over beers (and pineapple juice), you go with that unique opportunity. When it was loud, we had to speak up and that is what creates the unfortunate static noise. This can't be fixed. But much of our conversation sounds ok, and is worth the 53 minutes of your time.
What started out as questions & answers quickly became a long talk about Metal. Alan had the most to say; Jarkko talked a lot too. Lucky for you, I mostly listened. Recording, touring, sightseeing, and more were discussed. Regardless of the sound quality, this is a must-listen. You have 3 people from different backgrounds, countries & cultures, yet all the same age and all in the music industry. Common Metal ground was found among the three of us, even though our places in Metal are quite different.

This was a long time coming. I've been a Kreator fan for 20 years, so speaking with Mille was a highlight of my Metal life. As with Exodus, I purposefully did not go into our conversation with any planned questions. I just wanted to have a great talk about Kreator. I only had a few minutes to speak with Mille, but it felt like an hour-long conversation because my mind was so deep in Kreatorland. So much to talk about, so little time. But I'm glad we got to talk about the Renewal & Endorama albums, two of my favorites. Mille was very humble, relaxed, and displayed no sense of his royalty status in Metal. After you listen to this, throw on the Coma Of Souls album and crank the volume!

To say that Exodus is legendary in Metal is an understatement. And to see them tour with Kreator is every Metalhead's dream. I was happy to speak with Tom, as he does not do too many interviews. I like how direct he was (after-show with the fans, thoughts on the other bands). He does seem to prefer the new material over the old, but I suppose he gets tired of the playing the same old songs all the time. But there is hope of getting some new songs in their setlist (Free For All!). And yes Tom, I do know you're not Gary Holt. You're Rob McKillop!

Whether it's the amazing and diverse Return To Metalopolis album, the classic Megadeth albums, or his fusion project OHM, Chris Poland can be counted on to deliver amazing guitar work. But his songwriting should be highlighted as much as his fretboard skills. "The Fall Of Babylon" is but one great example of the songwriting prowess Chris possesses. While Metal may be in his past and Fusion is where he is at (and always has been), all of his music is heavy in so many ways. You have the Megadeth albums, but you should also have Return To Metalopolis and the OHM album Circus Of Sound.
Chris was very open in our discussion of his life in music. What was to be a 30 minute conversation ended up lasting about an hour. Not surprising, since Chris has had many musical endeavors. He's covered alot of ground since the '70s, in many ways coming full circle...from The New Yorkers to OHM.
***UPDATE*** The following message is from Chris regarding our conversation about the song "The Fall Of Babylon."
<<< "Some of my songs are inspired by sorrow and regret. Not many but some are. Sometimes when I am asked in depth and with passion about these songs those memories come back to me like a flood and I am overwhelmed. I want to answer but I get a bit speechless when this happens and I am uncomfortable to say the least. For me, some things are best left in the past. Some wounds never heal. I will try not answer these anymore." - CP >>>

To say that Derek Sherinian is an accomplished musician is an understatement. His songwriting should outshine his collaborations. Whether it's his solo albums or Planet X, his music is "river, not quilt." He's able to seemingly without effort meld different styles of music into Prog Metal supremacy. His new album Molecular Heinosity is no exception, and could be his finest solo release yet. Derek was quite easy to talk with, being very open about his music, career, and life. The BNM Vault presents a classic broadcast: Hail To Odin - Viking/Folk Metal (originally aired October 18, 2005).
During WSCA's Autumn '05 pledge drive, BNM partnered with world music show World Vibes to feature Scandinavian music on both shows. For BNM's broadcast, the purpose was to highlight bands from Scandinavia of the Folk Metal genre and bands who wrote about Norse Mythology and culture. From Folk bands such as Ensiferum, Finntroll, Thyrfing, to pioneering Viking Metal bands such as Bathory, Unleashed, Enslaved, the Hail To Odin show could be the soundtrack to Ragnarok.

God is gracious. Indeed, as speaking with Rob Halford was a lesson in humility and respect. He may be called the Metal God, but he comes across as your best friend. What an honor and pleasure to speak with a man who has long been at the top of the Metal hierarchy. He was lengthy, and humble, with his responses. I like what he had to say about his unfortunate comments about Metal during his Two phase, as well as the possibility of hearing another approach to the Two music. And we all want Halford to scream out more Christmas tunes!

Fifth time is the charm. The previous four times I was scheduled to speak with one of the AA guys, it never happened. Uncut, unedited. Mike and I spoke in the back of the tourbus for about 30 minutes. He was very open about his youth, which was interesting to hear. We also discussed Portugal, which led to talk of sports. Our conversation was more personal, as opposed to just talking about Moonspell. His comment about Russia and Rocky IV was hilarious. One of my non-Metal interviews that is not connected with Black Night Meditations, but I'm posting here anyway. I've been a fan of The Human League since I heard their singles from the Dare album on the radio in '81-'82, and have been a fan ever since. I was excited to speak with Phil, and I had a lot I wanted to talk about. This interview was to promote their headlining slot on the Regeneration Tour 2008. I tried to touch on topics that fans would want to know about, as opposed to silly things that so many other interviews discuss. This is one of my best interviews, and it's because I love their music and Phil is so honest and forthcoming.
If you're looking to discover The Human League's music, I recommend the albums Secrets & Dare to start out with. Or if you're not so inclined to track down their albums, at least get The Very Best Of (white cover with an eye). Great song selection to get into THL. And hopefully you made it to the Regeneration Tour: www.regenerationtour.com If you have feedback on this interview, please email: blacknightmeditations(at)msn.com

Unfortunately there is a lot of loud sound-checking in the background at several points during our conversation. This couldn't be avoided. But if you love DT enough (you should),
you will learn to ignore the noise and just focus on the things that Niklas had to say. Obviously worth it.

This was more of a hilarious conversation than an interview. Neither of these guys take themselves too seriously. But I guess you really can't when you live in an RV. At least they are not homeless anymore. They'll tour with anyone.

Originally I felt that my interview was just ok. At times I rambled. But listening again, it's fine. Johnny's a good talker. Fredrik & Thomas were there too, but wouldn't
say much. Yet more proof that it's tough to get those laid back Scandinavians to talk. Hail Unleashed!

All went well here. Ahriman answered the questions very openly. I like the talk of his solo work, and his desire to tour with non-Metal bands. We were in a cold, damp basement for the interview, which I guess added a Black Metal quality.

While I enjoyed talking to these guys, they are the quiet, very laid back Scandinavians who don't open up too easily. But the honesty was there, and Enslaved are legends.

I was only supposed to talk with Ronny, but Jay joined in and made the interview better. The talk of their non-Metal
Church projects was cool. Too bad about Gigantour. I had to make this interview brief, as the band needed to get ready to go onstage.

One of my all-time favorite bands. This was my biggest interview, and I had way too many questions. I didn't even get to them all, since Bobby and I talked for so long. Interesting how he and I differ on the eras of the band.

Hansi was very gracious, and thankfully willing to talk for a long time, even as Leaves Eyes were soundchecking rather loudly. Blind Guardian is one of my favorites, and I'm glad we talked about the Nightfall album being the greatest, and ANATO being a disappointment. It's rather shocking to learn when we'll get the next album.

Alex was incredibly willing to talk for quite awhile. Including about 10 more minutes off the record. I was able to get the latest info about both Leaves Eyes and Atrocity, since they're the same bands (members, not style). LE is really dedicated to touring a lot in support of the Vinland Saga album.

Fernando talked a lot, and that was great. I had enough questions, and didn't even get to all of them. Thankfully Fernando had a lot to say. The highlight being our discussion about comic books and movies. He spoke candidly about the different styles of music that Moonspell has
composed. Definitely one of my better interviews.

This was not a scheduled interview. After seeing their brilliant performance, I asked Nathan at the merch table a few questions. This is why it's so brief and not very in-depth. Great band!

While I didn't ask Herman why so many of their fans are not from the Metal community, we did have a great talk about instrumental guitar albums and players. And the band does not want to tour with Iron Maiden...because they already have. Well that's no excuse!
