The BNM Vault: Hammerfall interview & BNM Metal Radio Show - 16 Aug 05
June 26, 2009 12:36 PM PDT
The BNM Vault presents a classic broadcast: BNM radio show with Hammerfall interview (originally aired August 16, 2005). Back in August '05, I interviewed Oscar from Hammerfall on their tour bus before the band took the stage. They were touring in support of their Chapter V album, with Edguy and Into Eternity opening. The interview has never been made available since it originally aired (there are some Hammerfall tunes mixed in). Also on the show were dozens of other killer Metal tunes. If you want the 8/16/05 playlist, send an email. Email/Requests: blacknightmeditations@msn.com

The playlist for the June 9th show is so Metal beyond Metal that just thinking about it causes me to bang my head. In fact, I think it should be a requirement that all listeners must bang their heads while cranking BNM. Here's some trivia: "Bang thy head that doesn't bang" was a quote listed on the back of what debut record from which once-great, former Metal band? A 5-hour show! Queensryche was featured for the first 4 hours. Vocalist Geoff Tate was scheduled to call in during the broadcast. He never did (the interview is being rescheduled), but I kept spinning Ryche Metal! I played 4 hours of live cuts, bootlegs, forgotten tunes, requests. Queensryche is one of my all-time favorites! The 5th hour of the show featured new songs from Amorphis, Vanmakt, Assaulter and requested Into Eternity, Nevermore, Dismember, and other tunes. Email/Requests: blacknightmeditations@msn.com

You'll hear my report on the Testament concert I attended. Plus, I opened the show with 3 lesser-known tunes from the band. If you haven't already, be sure to listen to or download my interview with Testament vocalist Chuck Billy from April '08. Some killer blocks on the playlist: Slayer, Onslaught, Bathory as well as Alcatrazz, Overkill (demo), Racer X were highlights. Requests included Vader, Pharaoh, Manowar, Candlemass, and many more. The 5/19 broadcast featured my live phone interview with Rusty Cooley. Typically, I'd edit out the interview since it has its own podcast. For this BNM posdcast, I left it in so everyone will be sure to hear it. As for songs on the show, lots of new releases but some old stuff as well. Let me know what you think of the Steel Panther song! Email/Requests: blacknightmeditations@msn.com

Every once in awhile I discover a new instrumental guitar album that reaffirms my long-standing belief that "Shred" will never die. I missed out on Rusty Cooley's solo album several years ago, and I am glad that Lion Music recently reissued the album because it is easily one of the better guitar albums in years. Even his band Outworld released an impressive album. He's shredded with Derek Sherinian, and is forming a new band with Derek. Naturally, I had to speak with Rusty and learn more about him as a musician, as an instructor, and as a person. We spoke live on-air for over 40 minutes, and not only did I really enjoy our conversation but I actually feel like I learned something about the music & the instrument. Be aware! The audio quality is bad at times. Myself, Alan Averill (Primordial) and Jarkko Aaltonen (Korpiklaani) sat down in a pub with loud people and loud music. This made the recording very difficult. But when you have the opportunity to talk Metal for an hour with two bands over beers (and pineapple juice), you go with that unique opportunity. When it was loud, we had to speak up and that is what creates the unfortunate static noise. This can't be fixed. But much of our conversation sounds ok, and is worth the 53 minutes of your time. What started out as questions & answers quickly became a long talk about Metal. Alan had the most to say; Jarkko talked a lot too. Lucky for you, I mostly listened. Recording, touring, sightseeing, and more were discussed. Regardless of the sound quality, this is a must-listen. You have 3 people from different backgrounds, countries & cultures, yet all the same age and all in the music industry. Common Metal ground was found among the three of us, even though our places in Metal are quite different. This was a long time coming. I've been a Kreator fan for 20 years, so speaking with Mille was a highlight of my Metal life. As with Exodus, I purposefully did not go into our conversation with any planned questions. I just wanted to have a great talk about Kreator. I only had a few minutes to speak with Mille, but it felt like an hour-long conversation because my mind was so deep in Kreatorland. So much to talk about, so little time. But I'm glad we got to talk about the Renewal & Endorama albums, two of my favorites. Mille was very humble, relaxed, and displayed no sense of his royalty status in Metal. After you listen to this, throw on the Coma Of Souls album and crank the volume! To say that Exodus is legendary in Metal is an understatement. And to see them tour with Kreator is every Metalhead's dream. I was happy to speak with Tom, as he does not do too many interviews. I like how direct he was (after-show with the fans, thoughts on the other bands). He does seem to prefer the new material over the old, but I suppose he gets tired of the playing the same old songs all the time. But there is hope of getting some new songs in their setlist (Free For All!). And yes Tom, I do know you're not Gary Holt. You're Rob McKillop! Whether it's the amazing and diverse Return To Metalopolis album, the classic Megadeth albums, or his fusion project OHM, Chris Poland can be counted on to deliver amazing guitar work. But his songwriting should be highlighted as much as his fretboard skills. "The Fall Of Babylon" is but one great example of the songwriting prowess Chris possesses. While Metal may be in his past and Fusion is where he is at (and always has been), all of his music is heavy in so many ways. You have the Megadeth albums, but you should also have Return To Metalopolis and the OHM album Circus Of Sound. Chris was very open in our discussion of his life in music. What was to be a 30 minute conversation ended up lasting about an hour. Not surprising, since Chris has had many musical endeavors. He's covered alot of ground since the '70s, in many ways coming full circle...from The New Yorkers to OHM. ***UPDATE*** The following message is from Chris regarding our conversation about the song "The Fall Of Babylon." <<< "Some of my songs are inspired by sorrow and regret. Not many but some are. Sometimes when I am asked in depth and with passion about these songs those memories come back to me like a flood and I am overwhelmed. I want to answer but I get a bit speechless when this happens and I am uncomfortable to say the least. For me, some things are best left in the past. Some wounds never heal. I will try not answer these anymore." - CP >>> Email your feedback to: blacknightmeditations@msn.com BLACK NIGHT MEDITATIONS - A heathenish foray along the shining path. To say that Derek Sherinian is an accomplished musician is an understatement. His songwriting should outshine his collaborations. Whether it's his solo albums or Planet X, his music is "river, not quilt." He's able to seemingly without effort meld different styles of music into Prog Metal supremacy. His new album Molecular Heinosity is no exception, and could be his finest solo release yet. Derek was quite easy to talk with, being very open about his music, career, and life. I am glad to have had 40 minutes of his time. If you have any requests, please email blacknightmeditations@msn.com. The BNM Vault presents a classic broadcast: Hail To Odin - Viking/Folk Metal (originally aired October 18, 2005). During WSCA's Autumn '05 pledge drive, BNM partnered with world music show World Vibes to feature Scandinavian music on both shows. For BNM's broadcast, the purpose was to highlight bands from Scandinavia of the Folk Metal genre and bands who wrote about Norse Mythology and culture. From Folk bands such as Ensiferum, Finntroll, Thyrfing, to pioneering Viking Metal bands such as Bathory, Unleashed, Enslaved, the Hail To Odin show could be the soundtrack to Ragnarok. God is gracious. Indeed, as speaking with Rob Halford was a lesson in humility and respect. He may be called the Metal God, but he comes across as your best friend. What an honor and pleasure to speak with a man who has long been at the top of the Metal hierarchy. He was lengthy, and humble, with his responses. I like what he had to say about his unfortunate comments about Metal during his Two phase, as well as the possibility of hearing another approach to the Two music. And we all want Halford to scream out more Christmas tunes! I was joined in the studio by Amber, one of WSCA's Youth FM djs, to speak with Rob. Fifth time is the charm. The previous four times I was scheduled to speak with one of the AA guys, it never happened. Thankfully guitarist Johan Soderberg was available to give me 20 minutes before the band's meet & greet. As with every other Scandinavian musician I've interviewed, Johan was soft-spoken and laid back, therefore tough to interview, but quite honest. He spoke about their latest album, the band's record label, and songwriting among other things. And you know you want an Amon Amarth bobblehead! Uncut, unedited. Mike and I spoke in the back of the tourbus for about 30 minutes. He was very open about his youth, which was interesting to hear. We also discussed Portugal, which led to talk of sports. Our conversation was more personal, as opposed to just talking about Moonspell. His comment about Russia and Rocky IV was hilarious. Mike was great to speak with, and thankfully he had a lot to say. When we were done and I was leaving he gave me a guitar pick and said, "it must seem weird getting a guitar pick from a drummer." YNGWIE IS GOD. That proclamation from 1984 can still be stated today. There is something to be said for having a vision and sticking to it. Yngwie knows what he wants, and he always goes for it. He's very forthcoming in our conversation. Even humble at times. I love his comments about working with Dio. And did I hear him taking out the trash at the end of our talk? Yngwie the multi-tasker! Stefan's call from Sweden came through via the Metal Blade offices in Los Angeles which was then routed to New Hampshire. There is an obvious sound quality issue because of this. I did amplify Stefan's audio. Regardless, this is worth listening to because Falconer deserves more promotion for their excellent style of Folk Power Metal. We discuss the new album, live shows, Mithotyn, and bobbleheads. Wouldn't you want a Falconer bobblehead? BLACK NIGHT MEDITATIONS - A heathenish foray along the shining path. The Human League interview - Phil Oakey 06/08August 30, 2008 10:24 AM PDT
One of my non-Metal interviews that is not connected with Black Night Meditations, but I'm posting here anyway. I've been a fan of The Human League since I heard their singles from the Dare album on the radio in '81-'82, and have been a fan ever since. I was excited to speak with Phil, and I had a lot I wanted to talk about. This interview was to promote their headlining slot on the Regeneration Tour 2008. I tried to touch on topics that fans would want to know about, as opposed to silly things that so many other interviews discuss. This is one of my best interviews, and it's because I love their music and Phil is so honest and forthcoming.

Chuck was in a very good mood, talking a lot about the Formation album, and touring. I like his thoughts on The Ritual and the Return EP. And it's good to know that I was partially right about the Face In The Sky lyrics. But Chuck the outdoorsman? Tough to picture him holding a fishing rod and wearing one of those tackle vests. BLACK NIGHT MEDITATIONS - A heathenish foray along the shining path. Aural ruminations of Black, Death, Speed, Thrash, Doom, Folk, Shred, Power, Prog & Traditional Metal.
July 04, 2008 10:47 PM PDT
Benedictum is a such a great band. The Seasons album is an excellent slab that is highly recommended. And Veronica Freeman on vocals sounds like Dio & Doro's husky-voiced wild child. I'm very fortunate that Veronica was willing to talk live on-air for so long about the band, and about herself. She was quite open about her history and the music. Very gracious. BLACK NIGHT MEDITATIONS - A heathenish foray along the shining path. Aural ruminations of Black, Death, Speed, Thrash, Doom, Folk, Shred, Power, Prog & Traditional Metal.
July 04, 2008 11:00 PM PDT
Gaahl needs no introduction. This was more of a conversation than an interview, but most are. I avoid tabloid-ish topics, so if you're expecting salacious details on rehashed old news then look elsewhere. We talked about Folk music, David Bowie, nature, and the future of Trelldom, Gorgoroth, Gaahlskag and Sigfader. He is very soft-spoken, so crank your volume while listening. BLACK NIGHT MEDITATIONS - A heathenish foray along the shining path. Aural ruminations of Black, Death, Speed, Thrash, Doom, Folk, Shred, Power, Prog & Traditional Metal.
July 04, 2008 11:11 PM PDT
To celebrate BNM's Old-School Night on 8/14, I talked with Ski (former Deadly Blessing vocalist) live on-air. Speaking of celebrating, it was Ski's birthday too. We talked about his current band Faith Factor and their new 7/7/07 ep. Ski had plenty to say about Faith Factor, and his days with Deadly Blessing. DB's Ascend From The Cauldron is classic, and highly recommended. As is the FF ep, so get them both! BLACK NIGHT MEDITATIONS - A heathenish foray along the shining path. Aural ruminations of Black, Death, Speed, Thrash, Doom, Folk, Shred, Power, Prog & Traditional Metal.
July 05, 2008 12:28 AM PDT
Easily a highlight of my Metal life, speaking with the legendary Doro Pesch. I enjoyed every minute of her insight into her career, touring, music in general. And Doro has the best speaking voice. I could've continued beyond half an hour, so perhaps I'll speak with her again next time she tours. Hail Doro! Hail Warlock!
July 05, 2008 12:39 AM PDT
I did not have much time to speak with Ravn, as the band was starting to prepare for their set. I tried to throw in as much as I could, so this sounds a little rushed on my part. I did not get to cover everything, and I would've liked to delve into the past more. But I liked what I did
July 05, 2008 01:01 AM PDT
Since I'm a big fan of Eidolon, I requested to talk with one of the Drovers. Shawn was gracious enough to talk a little about Eidolon, among all the Megadeth questions. His idea of a perfect Megadeth live setlist is great, though we'll never hear it. Not only did the interview go quite well, but the show did too.
July 06, 2008 10:07 AM PDT
Unfortunately there is a lot of loud sound-checking in the background at several points during our conversation. This couldn't be avoided. But if you love DT enough (you should),

This was more of a hilarious conversation than an interview. Neither of these guys take themselves too seriously. But I guess you really can't when you live in an RV. At least they are not homeless anymore. They'll tour with anyone. BLACK NIGHT MEDITATIONS - A heathenish foray along the shining path. All went well here. Ahriman answered the questions very openly. I like the talk of his solo work, and his desire to tour with non-Metal bands. We were in a cold, damp basement for the interview, which I guess added a Black Metal quality. BLACK NIGHT MEDITATIONS - A heathenish foray along the shining path. One of my all-time favorite bands. This was my biggest interview, and I had way too many questions. I didn't even get to them all, since Bobby and I talked for so long. Blind Guardian interview - Hansi Kursch 12/06July 06, 2008 11:40 AM PDT
Hansi was very gracious, and thankfully willing to talk for a long time, even as Leaves Eyes were soundchecking rather loudly. Blind Guardian is one of my favorites, and I'm glad we talked about the Nightfall album being the greatest, and ANATO being a disappointment. It's rather shocking to learn when we'll get the next album. BLACK NIGHT MEDITATIONS - A heathenish foray along the shining path. Leaves Eyes interview - Alex Krull 12/06July 06, 2008 11:52 AM PDT
Alex was incredibly willing to talk for quite awhile. Including about 10 more minutes off the record. I was able to get the latest info about both Leaves Eyes and Atrocity, since they're the same bands (members, not style). LE is really dedicated to touring a lot in support of the Vinland Saga album.
